Job Role: Group Transport Manager

Salary: £37,326.52 pa & group bonus

Location: Wrexham or Hawick

Job Type: Full Time, Permanent

Marlin Industries has an exciting opportunity for a Group Transport Manager to join the team. There is a requirement to spend time at each of our sites in Wrexham, Newport and Hawick with an option of being based either at Wrexham or Hawick. The successful candidate will join us on a full time permanent basis and will receive a competitive salary of £37,326.52 pa plus group bonus.

The Group Transport Manager role:

The timely movement of goods to and from each of the Marlin operating sites is fundamental to the viability of the business as a whole. Through the constant availability of drums to collect from locations across the UK there is a good financial justification for operating own vehicles. This necessitates a Transport Manager to ensure legal compliance of vehicles & drivers as well as scheduling vehicle movements in the most cost effective manner.  

Key Responsibilities of the Group Transport Manager:

- To ensure Marlin operated vehicles & drivers comply with relevant legislation.

- To demonstrate compliance through the generation and maintenance of suitable records.

- To regularly review the Marlin transport fleet in terms of suitability and size for the scope of work being undertaken.

- To develop & maintain a suitable range of sub contracted hauliers to support the Marlin fleet.

- To receive transport requests via the Transport Database and to plan vehicle movements. Vehicle movements are to be planned on the basis of satisfying customer delivery due dates using the most appropriate vehicle & least cost route. In practice good cost control is achieved through matching outward journeys with the collection of drums and/or raw materials used in the production of reels & drums.

- To monitor the financial performance of the transport fleet at each site from which vehicles are operated.

- To record and monitor drivers working hours, including overtime.

- To record and monitor fuel consumption for all vehicles.

- To monitor the cost of vehicle maintenance & repair, identify excessive expenditure and working with Directors, develop lower cost solutions.

- To effectively monitor and develop personnel reporting to the Transport manager through annual appraisal coupled to regular review against identified action plans.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience required by the Group Transport Manager:


Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC)

- Maths GCSE grade C or higher

- English GCSE grade C or higher

- Demonstrable IT skills with Microsoft Excel & Word essential

- Good communication skills, particularly verbal

- Good time management skills

- Ability to prioritise a range of different tasks


- Good UK geographical knowledge

- Good negotiation & team building skills

- Good ability to delegate

- Ability to monitor & report on performance of individuals under the supervision of the Transport Manager
